I can’t believe that I haven’t heard of Peter Hitchens until today. Perhaps he’s been overshadowed by his more famous (and more atheist) elder brother. Such is the zeitgeist. Though I love an unapologetic and pugilistic conservative, his brand of conservatism leads directly to the conclusion that a large and paternalistic state is necessary to guard against the vagaries of human nature. While the staunch traditionalist within me concedes that this will ensure order, the combative classical liberal within me understands that this will necessarily diminish liberty which I believe to be a good of inherent value.
